Q: How do I look after my Plated Jewelry?

A: Plated Gold, Platinum and Silver - tips to help your jewelry last longer

Plating of metals allows the production of stunning pieces at very reasonable prices and gives everyone access to luxury.

Some extra care must then be taken with plated jewelry.

  1. Beware of sprays such as perfume. Apply your favorite eau de toilette before you slip on your prized jewels. Allow it time to dry, it will only take a moment.
  2. Take time with your creams and lotions. Give your skin time to absorb them. Then slip on your jewelry.
  3. Avoid substances like nail polish remover, chlorine-based cleaners, and anything acidic.
  4. Doing your routine at the gym is not the time to look fantastic. The sweat from your body can react with the thin plating and cause your jewelry to lose its luster.
  5. Avoid all swimming in your jewelry. Especially chlorinated pools, Spa's and Hot Tubs!
  6. You will want to remove your plated jewelry before cooking dinner, as some fruits and vegetables can contain acid.
  7. When your little one needs to have their diaper changed, remove your plated jewelry first.
  8. Store your plated jewelry in separate soft bags.

Modern metal plating (Gold, Platinum, and Silver) is done in two main ways:

  • Using an electrical charge
  • Using chemical bonding

This allows a thin layer of metal to be bonded to another more economical metal, usually copper. The thin layer of Gold, Silver or Platinum plating is usually 1/1000 to 3/1000 of an inch thick.

The plating layer is usually referred to in microns. One micron equals one-millionth of a meter. Yep, that’s small.

Over time the base metal will invade the thin coating of Gold, Silver or Platinum. The result will be fading and loss of luster.
