A: Plated Gold, Platinum and Silver - tips to help your jewelry last longer
Plating of metals allows the production of stunning pieces at very reasonable prices and gives everyone access to luxury.
Some extra care must then be taken with plated jewelry.
Modern metal plating (Gold, Platinum, and Silver) is done in two main ways:
This allows a thin layer of metal to be bonded to another more economical metal, usually copper. The thin layer of Gold, Silver or Platinum plating is usually 1/1000 to 3/1000 of an inch thick.
The plating layer is usually referred to in microns. One micron equals one-millionth of a meter. Yep, that’s small.
Over time the base metal will invade the thin coating of Gold, Silver or Platinum. The result will be fading and loss of luster.
